Getting my nails did

If you’ve been reading my blog for a while now, you’ll know that I loooove getting my nails did. There’s just something about using the time to pause that makes it feel almost therapeutic.

I’ve recently started using gelish polish and I absolutely love it. My nails feel like they’re getting stronger and it takes less than half the time to apply compared to the hard gel nails. I used to do quite elaborate designs but I’ve gone much simpler. Check out some of the styles I opted for – you may just find inspiration for your next set.

A different take on soul mates

Eat, Pray, Love is one of my favourite movies for many reasons. Reason number 1 is…well, Julia Roberts of course! I absolutely love her! She’s just one of those actors – if you see her name on the cast list, chances are that it’ll be a good movie, the same can be said for Denzel Washington, Matt Damon, Johnny Depp etc.

Anyhoo, if you watched the movie, you’ll know that one of the words she learns while in Italy is attraversiamo (let’s cross over). For some reason, this word popped into my head and I couldn’t remember what it meant, so I turned to my trusty friend Google who always has the answer and stumbled across this quote from the movie:

People think a soul mate is your perfect fit, and that’s what everyone wants. But a true soul mate is a mirror, the person who shows you everything that is holding you back, the person who brings you to your own attention so you can change your life.

A true soul mate is probably the most important person you’ll ever meet, because they tear down your walls and smack you awake. But to live with a soul mate forever? Nah. Too painful. Soul mates, they come into your life just to reveal another layer of yourself to you, and then leave.

A soul mate’s purpose is to shake you up, tear apart your ego a little bit, show you your obstacles and addictions, break your heart open so new light can get in, make you so desperate and out of control that you have to transform your life, then introduce you to your spiritual master…

– Elizabeth Gilbert, Eat, Pray, Love

I never really thought of a soul mate in this way and found it so profound. How interesting to consider that your soul mate could be the very person that challenges you, pushes your buttons even.

If I look back at situations and people who came into my life and disrupted the status quo, I can honestly say that I would not be the same without these people and the impact that they’ve had on me. I believe that everything happens for a reason – for us to learn and to grow. But to consider that the very peeps who grated my carrot (I love this saying!), could be one of my soul mates…wow!

It’s a truly liberating thought and makes it easier to let go of any negative feelings I may have towards the said carrot graters. I guess it’s similar to the idea that everyone we meet is a potential teacher, as is every situation we encounter.

Bokeh Fashion Festival 2016

A HUGE congratulations to the team that pulled together an amazing showcase of our local talent over the weekend! The Mercedes-Benz Bokeh SA International Fashion Film Festival certainly lived up to its Bespoke theme and I’m so happy that I could be there to see it all unfold.

Team 2

This year, I decided to attend the second and final night of the festival. I’m not going to lie though, I had FOMO on the first night… but with the craziness that comes along with planning a wedding I wanted to spend some QT with my main squeeze.

I was blown away by the creativity of the fashion films that were featured in this year’s festival! Congratulations to each and every person who were part of these works of art! But as they say, there can only be one winner. Well done to Edward and Ashley Avis-Winters who came tops in the Mercedes-Benz category which meant a $10 000 cash prize!!

The winning moment

My gorgeous sister joined me at the Avenue in the V&A Waterfront which was the venue for Bokeh. To set the tone for the night, guests were greeted by a number of photographers and videographers as they walked the red carpet – and man, did our local hotties represent SA fashion!

Shamiel Hagee and Happy Umurerwa wearing Imprint

As fate would have it, I entered a competition that highlighted the amazing creations of SA designers on Tracy-Lee Rosslind’s Instagram page a few weeks ago. I was over the moon when I won a custom made silk dress from Aimmea – and it arrived just in time for Bokeh *happy dance*!

A letter to you

Hey you

I wanted to remind you how amazing you are.

You’ve overcome so much and like a phoenix rising from the ashes you’ve emerged stronger and wiser. You’ve done pretty well for yourself and I’m proud of you.

My wish for you is that amidst the busyness of life you pause – take some time for your Self, even if it’s just a few minutes. Thank your Self for always showing up. For rising to the occasion. You’ve done pretty well at this thing called life and I’m proud of you.

Your beauty can’t be defined by the limitations of this world. It runs far deeper into the depths of your soul. You are a strong, fierce woman.

Continue to walk tall. To use the challenges you encounter as opportunities for growth. Don’t allow anything to dim that beautiful light of yours.

You’ve done pretty well for yourself and I’m proud of you.
